Visit Preston

Preston is a city with a fascinating mixture of history, architecture, culture and green space. Situated on the River Ribble in Lancashire, it grew into an important centre of the Industrial Revolution, particularly through its textile industry, and today remains a lively regional city.

At the heart of Preston is The Harris, one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. This magnificent Grade I listed building was opened in 1893 following a substantial bequest from local lawyer Edmund Robert Harris. Today, it combines art, history, literature and learning and has become an important cultural hub for the city.

The surrounding Market Place and Flag Market form the historic civic heart of Preston and have been at the centre of city life for more than 800 years. The area contains a remarkable collection of historic buildings, including the Harris, Preston Town Hall and the city’s war memorial.

Away from the busy city centre, Avenham Park provides a welcome change of pace. Overlooking the River Ribble, this beautiful Victorian park was laid out in 1861 and retains much of its original character. Its mature trees, gardens, riverside walks and impressive views make it one of Preston’s most attractive open spaces.

Preston also has a proud sporting, cultural and industrial heritage, while its position makes it a useful base for exploring the wider Lancashire countryside. It is a city that has continued to evolve while retaining many reminders of the people and industries that helped shape it.

Preston may not always be the first Lancashire city that comes to mind, but spend a little time exploring it and its character soon becomes apparent — a city where history, culture and everyday modern life sit comfortably alongside one another.
