Description

Londonderry, also widely known as Derry, is a historic city in Northern Ireland, celebrated for its remarkable city walls, rich cultural heritage and lively arts scene. Set beside the River Foyle, it offers visitors a memorable blend of history, architecture, traditional music, independent shops and warm local hospitality. The city’s official tourism guide uses the name Derry~Londonderry, reflecting the different names by which the city is known.

The city’s most famous attraction is its 17th-century City Walls, among the best-preserved historic city walls in Europe. Visitors can walk along the ramparts, admire the historic gateways and cannons, and enjoy views across the old city. Inside the walls, a maze of historic streets reveals centuries of fascinating stories and architectural character.

One of the city’s most recognisable buildings is The Guildhall, a striking neo-Gothic landmark near the waterfront. Its beautiful stained-glass windows and impressive interiors make it well worth exploring. Nearby, the Peace Bridge curves gracefully across the River Foyle, connecting the city centre with the Ebrington area. Opened in 2011, it has become a powerful symbol of connection and reconciliation.

For visitors interested in culture and history, the Bogside area is home to the famous People’s Gallery murals, which tell important stories about the city’s civil rights movement and more recent past. Museums and guided walking tours provide further opportunities to understand the events that have shaped the city.

Londonderry also has a lively contemporary side. The Craft Village offers a charming setting for browsing local crafts and enjoying a coffee, while the city’s pubs, restaurants and music venues provide plenty of opportunities to experience traditional Irish hospitality. The city is particularly renowned for its annual Halloween celebrations, which bring visitors from far and wide.

Beyond the city, the surrounding North West region offers dramatic coastlines, beautiful countryside and opportunities for walking and exploring. Whether you’re drawn by history, culture, photography or simply the atmosphere of a distinctive and welcoming city, Londonderry makes an excellent destination for a short break.
